MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS

My calm story

calm was my ‘calm in the chaos.’ As a young kid at calm, I learned effective and personally tailored coping mechanisms. A key memory I have is learning ‘Big Girl Breaths,’ a way to control my breathing. Years later, I still take these ‘Big Girl Breaths’ in every stressful situation – whether it be before a large test or the moment I step out on stage at a dance competition. I took the skills I acquired and applied them to every instance in my life.

In the face of adversity, calm taught me that resilience is not just a fleeting moment of bravery—it’s a way of life. It’s about finding the beauty in the broken, the strength in the struggle, the hope in the heartache. calm taught me that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed, and it’s also okay to reach out for help. Your situation never defines you or your potential.

calm changed my life.

Five tips for getting through the school year
  • Prioritize your mental health
School can be stressful, but taking care of your mental health should always come first. Take breaks when you need to, practice mindfulness, and don’t hesitate to talk to someone you trust if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength.
  • Create a balanced routine
A well-balanced routine is key to managing both academics and personal life. Set realistic goals for your schoolwork, but also make time for hobbies, friends, and self-care. Having structure helps reduce stress and keeps you grounded during busy times.
  • Stay connected with your support system
Whether it’s friends, family, teachers, or a counselor, staying connected with people who care about you is essential. Surrounding yourself with a support system helps you navigate tough days, and having someone to talk to can make all the difference.
  • Practice self-compassion
It’s easy to be hard on yourself when things don’t go as planned, but remember that no one is perfect. Celebrate your small victories and learn from your setbacks without beating yourself up. Practicing self-compassion will help you maintain a positive mindset.
  • Recognize signs of stress and burnout
It’s important to recognize when stress turns into burnout. Symptoms like constant fatigue, lack of motivation, or irritability are signs that you may need to take a step back and recharge. Don’t ignore these feelings—reach out for help if needed, and take time to rest.
