How long have you been at CALM?

I started at CALM as a graduate student trainee in the 1980’s and saw my very first client at CALM. I returned to CALM as a licensed therapist in 2004 and have been working here ever since.

What is your role at CALM?

Currently I am the Program Manager for the Child Abuse Treatment Program in the Santa Barbara office.

Please share one of your best CALM experiences (a time you felt like you really made a difference.)

My best experiences at CALM have been working with suicidal teens and seeing their lives completely change. I was working with a 12 year old girl who was experiencing ongoing physical and emotional abuse from both parents and who was depressed, withdrawn, cutting and suicidal when she first entered treatment. I was able to engage her mother in family therapy, and by the end of treatment my client had stopped the self destructive behavior, was engaged in normal teen activities with peers, and stated, “My mom is my best friend.” Being able to witness this kind of healing in families brings me joy.

Finish the sentence. “If I could do one thing to make kids’ lives better, I would….”

Provide the material and emotional support for all parents to enable them to create a safe and loving home environment for their children.

What is one thing you wish people knew about CALM?

CALM has created a healing community where parents and children can find the support to recover from trauma. Coming to CALM is often the first time children and parents have experienced a safe place. I frequently hear from clients “CALM has saved my life.”
