SUMMARY: The part-time, 20 hour a week, Mental Health Consultant works at the Storyteller Children’s Center to support teachers/facilitators, children and families. The Consultant supports teachers in the classroom by assisting with observations, providing coaching to help teachers handle challenging behavior and offering reflective practice groups to help teachers reflect on their work with children, responses and beliefs. The Consultant also provides training and education to support teachers in understanding child development, social-emotional targeted interventions and other topics important to the teaching team. The Consultant works with children in the classroom who are exhibiting challenging behaviors by providing social-emotional activities and targeted behavior interventions. In addition, the Mental Health Consultant reaches out to families who may need services or referrals, parent education and support with their child.
Therapeutic/Mental Health Consultation Responsibilities
- Creates a treatment plan with measurable and observable goals in collaboration with supervisor, client, teachers and school administrators.
- Participates in completion of clinical assessment with clients to assess their strengths and needs.
- Provides developmentally appropriate therapeutic interventions for children and families in individual, group or family settings
- Coordinates with other therapists, consultants, and partners to implement treatment plans, when appropriate.
- Works with teachers, aides, school site staff, and other professionals in the classroom.
- Coaches teachers on targeted behavior interventions.
- Models appropriate interactions with children and adolescents.
- Provides reflective practice groups for teachers, as needed.
- Supports teachers and staff in restorative approaches.
- Assists teachers in parent conferences and other meetings.
- Organizes and provides trainings for teachers, administrators, school staff, and parents.
- Maintains confidentiality of all information.
- Maintains cooperative working relationships with students, parents, families, teachers, and school staff.
- Maintains a minimum of 60% documentable clinical time.
- Participates in individual and group clinical supervision as required.
- Completes all agency required documentation, including progress notes and assessments, in a timely manner and according to agency policy and best practice.
- Provides regular reports/notes to site administrators and teachers.
- Meets Medi-Cal documentation standards, as needed.
- Completes items on Electronic Health Record task list in a timely manner.
- Attends CALM agency staff meetings and weekly team meetings.
- Attends trainings and conferences as needed or required by supervisor.
- Participates in community education and outreach.
- Maintains safe practices.
- Other duties as assigned that pertain to the position.
- Clinical Skills – Using a strength-based approach, builds rapport with clients and family members to support them in improving their mental health and meeting their goals; refers clients to ancillary services, as needed. Client care range shall be 50 – 60%, pro-rated on amount of time designated for client care. Documentation to be completed within 72 hours. Task list not to exceed 5 pending tasks due.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- MFT Associate, MSW or Psychology Associate from an accredited university or college required.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and experience working with complex issues facing children and families required.
- Knowledge of Mental Health Consultation or Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy preferred.
- A minimum of 1 – 2 years related work experience in a behavioral health agency, early childhood or elementary school helpful.
- Previous experience working in the nonprofit sector highly desirable.
- Experience working in either a private or public school site environment preferred.
- Must have a passion for CALM’s mission and the ability to convey that passion to others.
- Strong computer knowledge, using PC, Microsoft Word and Excel, and Outlook.

- Must have valid CA drivers’ license, clean DMV, reliable transportation, and criminal record clearance from DOJ.
- Ability to travel throughout Santa Barbara County.
- Ability to interact with all ages and cultural backgrounds.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
- May be required to provide prove of Measles vaccination of a Titer showing immunity, Pertussis vaccination in the last 10 years, and TB test within the last 4 years.

HOURS of EMPLOYMENT:
This is a part-time position. A work schedule will be established on consultation with the supervisor; the onsite schedule is Tuesday – Friday, 8:30am to 12:30pm.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Salary is dependent on experience. Positions of 30 or more hours per week, include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, paid holidays, vacation and sick time, and a 403(b) and matching retirement program.
