    Surviving Parenting During Remote Learning in the Time of Covid-19

    Join CALM therapist Megan Kooyman, ASW for parent support targeted at parenting through the pandemic. This is a skills-based class targeted at parents of elementary school students who are feeling overwhelmed at remote learning and parenting during this time. We will be learning skills on helping your children through remote instruction, balancing work, and home life, and managing anxiety related to COVID-19.

Esta es una clase basada en habilidades dirigida a padres de estudiantes de escuela primaria que se sienten agobiados por el aprendizaje a distancia y la crianza de los hijos durante este tiempo. Aprenderemos habilidades para ayudar a sus hijos a través el aprendizaje a distancia, establecer más equilibrio entre el trabajo y el hogar, y manejo de la ansiedad relacionada con COVID-19.

    Family Parenting Support Groups – February 1 – March 12, 2021

    • Session One: Trauma and Development – What is trauma? How trauma can show up for your children and the impact that trauma can have on development across life stages.
    • Session Two: Behaviors- Filters and Triggers – Understanding the lens of behaviors, exploring the root influences for them, and identifying real life situations that may impact you and your children.
    • Session Three: Behaviors- Resilience and Curiosity – How to shift from survival mode to active engagement by better understanding yourself and your own reactions to your child(ren)’s behaviors.
    • Session Four: Parenting and Life Experiences – The impact that your own upbringing has on your parenting today. Ways to think reflectively about your own experiences and how to identify areas for growth, awareness, and change.
    • Session Five: Communication- Skills and Strategies – Become familiar with types and styles of communication. Gain awareness of current approaches and take away skills for communicating within your family more effectively.
    • Session Six: Early, Middle, and Adolescent Development – Explore normative development across developmental stages. Address questions and apply skills to assist child/adolescent in gaining ability to improve self-regulation.
    • Parents will receive 1 hour of credit for every class they are able to attend (Maximum 1 class/hour per week). At the end of each 6-week session, a participation certificate will be emailed to each parent for the number of hours they have participated in the parenting group.
    • These groups are for parents in either CWS’s Voluntary Family Maintenance or Family Reunification programs. Parents may choose EITHER Tuesday at 5:30 PM or Thursday at 1:00 PM depending on their availability. Parents will learn how to identify the impacts of trauma in the family system. Parents will gain practical skills on how to support their children during these difficult times.  Parents will also have the opportunity to share their experiences and gain support from other parents in similar situations.

    Trauma Informed Parenting Support Group – February 1 – March 12, 2021

    • These groups will support Resource Parents in identifying the impacts of trauma and provide practical skills on how to manage concerning behaviors.  Resource Parents will have the opportunity to share their experiences and gain support from other attendees who understand the challenges and special circumstances of working with children in the foster-care system.
    • Session 1: Understanding Collective Trauma  – What is trauma? Types of trauma, and the impact of collective trauma on communities and self.
    • Session 2: Behaviors Make Sense – Understanding the primary functions of behaviors and how we are influenced by our experiences.
    • Session 3: Importance of Self-care – Why is self-care important? And ways to build your own self-care tool kit.
    • Session 4: Cultivating Connection – The importance of connection, types of disconnections, and skills for reconnection.
    • Session 5: How to Respond, Instead of Reacting AND Attachment, Regulation, and Competency  – Understanding needs, values, and how they influence behaviors. Introduction of response and limit setting skills (i.e. praise, problem solving) to address behaviors. Understanding parent/child relationships, improving awareness and consistency in responses. Building skills for self-regulation and healthy resiliency within yourself and your child.
    • Foster parents will receive 1 hour of credit for every class they are able to attend. At the end of each 6 week session, a participation certificate will be emailed to each foster parent for the number of hours they have participated in the parenting group

    • Una serie de 6 temas para padres biológicos que actualmente se encuentran en un programa de Preservación/Mantenimiento Familiar de Servicios de Bienestar Infantil (CWS). El grupo de apoyo de psicoeducación de CALM proveerá conocimiento y herramientas prácticas para abordar el trauma y igualmente para apoyar la relación entre padre-hijo.
    • Sesión 1: Comprender el Trauma – Información general sobre el trauma y discusión sobre el trauma en relación con COVID-19.
    • Sesión 2: Comportamientos y Desencadenantes Relacionados con el Trauma – Información sobre la función de los comportamientos y desencadenantes comunes de los comportamientos.
    • Sesión 3: Apego – Información sobre estrategias básicas para establecer relaciones con los hijos.
    • Sesión 4: Regulación y Manejo de Sentimientos – Información sobre la importancia del autocuidado y ayudar a su hijo con su propio autocuidado autorregulación
    • Sesión 5: Consecuencias Proactivas y Satisfaciendo las Necesidades: Respuestas Efectivas al Comportamiento del Niño /Adolescente – Introducir enfoques efectivos de los comportamientos.
    • Sesión 6: Sentido de Sí Mismo a Través de las Etapas del Desarrolló y las Transiciones – Información sobre las necesidades de desarrollo, el impacto del trauma en el desarrollo, el apoyo a la identidad de su hijo y las transiciones con trauma.
    • Padres de crianza reciviran 1 hora de credito por clase. Al terminar 6 semanas de clases, un certificado de participacion sera enviado a su coreo electronico a cada padre de crianza por los numeros de horas que participaron en el groupo.
