How long have you been at CALM?

I began to work at CALM in 2007 as a Child Family Specialist for Spirit.  Then in 2010 I transferred to the Great Beginnings Program as a Home Visitor.  I have been at CALM for 9 years.

What is your role at CALM?

I do a little of everything.  I have been a Home Visitor working with parents and providing them with positive parenting techniques.  I also work with moms and provide them with postpartum support.  I do Front Porch and I also co-facilitate in the Spanish DV Group that is being held in Santa Maria.

Please share one of your best CALM experiences (a time you felt like you really made a difference.)

One that always sticks to my mind is a young couple who had 4 children from ages 10 to 18 months.  This family struggled in setting age appropriate boundaries and limits with all their children.  The parents also struggled in doing activities as a family.  The parents often commented they were not used to having discipline or boundaries.  I worked with this family for 8 months.  These young parents were able to set boundaries, limits and structure around the home.  The family was able to set a day every week to engage as a family during a family night.  I have seen the family in the community and they mentioned how they continue to be grateful for the support and services that where provided.  As per parents report, they continue to enjoy family time and have structure in their home.

Finish the sentence. “If I could do one thing to make kids’ lives better, I would….”

Educate the parents in understanding the importance of having a good relationship with their children, teaching them that every day will be better than the last one.

What is one thing you wish people knew about CALM?

CALM is a great organization that focus on children and their families.   CALM has many programs to offer which people may not be aware of.
