I began working at CALM in 2014 and have worked with CALM for nearly 8 months.
I am a SPIRIT Child and Family Specialist.
Because the work of SPIRIT is the highest level of service a child can receive, they often have the highest level of need and can be extremely challenging. SPIRIT has a client who has been particularly difficult to engage – not talking or communicating, no expression of feelings, little or no self-esteem and just generally very guarded in everything and receives very little love and attention at home. While doing a skill-building activity with this client, he was smiling, talking and asking for help. During the activity, this client said he was having fun and it felt like 1000 on a scale of 1 to 10. In my short time with CALM, there have been many successes and some difficult outcomes, but this particular memory sticks out for me because it allowed a child to be a child for a moment and forget about the world that he normally lives in. Being a part of that and present with him was truly a gift and filled my heart.
Make sure that each and every child knows they are important and that their lives matter.
The one thing I wish people knew about CALM is the caliber of people working within the organization and the generosity of donors that help me be able to work and improve the lives of children and others within Santa Barbara and surrounding communities.
